Making of a New VIP Constituency: Why Wayanad suddenly becomes famous

The Wayanad constituency in Kerala is hogging the limelight because Congress president Rahul Gandhi is contesting from this seat apart from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Here are 10 important things to know about Wayanad and its significance for the Congress Party:

  1. It is bordered by the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka with sizeable SC/ST population. It has the largest tribal population in Kerala with 8 scheduled tribes (STs).
  2. Wayanad constituency crisscrosses three districts of Kerala: Wayanad, the northern district, bordering both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, northern mountain ranges of Kozhikode district and Malappuram district bordering Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu.
  3. It is one of the Left-Wing Extremism (Maoist) affected districts in the country.
  4. It is the least populous district in Kerala with 30% forest land.
  5. This hilly district, at the tri-junction of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, is known for its salubrious climate and spices.
  6. Wayanad was carved out during restructuring of constituencies in 2008.
  7. It  has seven assembly constituencies: Manathawady, Sulthan Bathery, Nilambur, Wandoor, Eranad, Thiruvambady, Kalpetta
  8. For the first time, Rahul Gandhi is going to contest from a seat that is outside the family bastion of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.
  9. This constituency has been a Congress bastion. The last elections were won by Congress’ M.A. Shanavas.
  10. By fielding Rahul Gandhi, the Grand Old Party is seeking to maximize its seats in Kerala in particular, and the South in general.
